The question that shapes every act of mercy is the question of audience: when we give, who are we really giving for? The hypocrite gives to be seen, seeking not to bless to poor but to build a reputation. Those who give in secret seek to receive their heavenly father‘s reward. Their giving isn’t an act to fill themselves up but one flowing from the fullness they have already received in Christ, giving as children known and loved by their Heavenly Father.
