Peter begins a difficult section with one of the clearest explanations of the nature and purpose of Christ’s suffering. As he reminds suffering Christians of Christ’s victory at the cross he points to God’s faithfulness and rescue in the life of Noah. Reassured of Christ’s victory and God’s faithfulness, Peter reminds us of our baptism as a public declaration of our union with Christ in his death and victorious resurrection.
